Abstract

Accidental burial by sand is a potentially fatal hazard of childhood play. Only 15 cases have been reported in the literature. In the Netherlands this is the first case report. Case description. We describe a case with lethal outcome of a 9-year-old boy that was buried by sand while digging a hole in the dunes. Conclusion. In the Netherlands there seems to be no adequate registration of accidental burial by sand. Mainly from the analysis performed by the 'Stichting Consument en Veiligheid' it is concluded that a fatal outcome occurs at least one or two times a year in the Netherlands. Systematic information to the public about prevention is lacking.
