Treating attention deficits

Abstract

In this article we discuss the recent developments in the field of treatment of attention deficits in brain-injured patients. A review of the literature is presented. Three models of attention training are evaluated: repetitive practice of attention tasks in order to improve attention in general, the use of strategies and behavior modification. It is examined to what extent attention training programs are based on psychological theories and models of attention and attention disorders. Special attention is devoted to methodological issues in the evaluation research of the training programs. In general, this research is characterized by methodological shortcomings. Suggestions for improvements are given.
