N2 - Research has shown that prevention programmes can be effective in curtailing the escalation of disruptive or delinquent behaviours displayed by children at a young age (see Chapter 11, this volume). To be effective, interventions need to be welltimed, directed at the appropriate risk groups, and aimed at malleable, causal risk factors (Dryfoos, 1990; Durlak, 1995; Van der Ploeg and Scholte, 1997). To make sure that a prevention or intervention programme is applied at the appropriate risk group, screening and risk assessments are needed. To make sure that the subsequent prevention or intervention programme is aimed at the right criteria, needs assessments are required also.
