Abstract

Bacterial infections of the lower airways in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have been investigated extensively for over 50 years now. Although the precise role of these infections in the pathogenesis of COPD is still not fully established, many data have become available on the bacteriology, immunology, pathogenesis of the disease, and the pathogenic repertoire of the infecting microorganisms.
