Abstract

General characteristics concerning all major attributes of pathologic states and physiologic processes in medicine are stored in a knowledge base named MEDWISE. Data on symptoms, complications, laboratory findings, therapy, prognosis, etc. , are ordered in a logical manner, whereas the ICD-structure is employed to cover all possible diseases. The use of natural language and the causality-oriented approach permit understanding of the reasoning processes followed during retrieval actions. The system can easily be up-dated, e. g. , with new information from the literature. Application of the microcomputer offers wide potential as a daily companion to the physician or as an aid for teaching purposes.
