Abstract

Human neutrophil antigens (HNAs) are a family of glycoproteins mainly expressed on human granulocytes. Immune responses to HNA occur via the formation of alloantibodies and/or autoantibodies. These anti-HNAs can be involved in the pathophysiology of several disorders including transfusion-related acute lung injury, fetal and neonatal alloimmune neutropenia, and autoimmune neutropenia. To date, 14 HNA alleles have been identified and divided over five antigen systems (HNA-1, HNA-2, HNA-3, HNA-4, HNA-5). Over the years, several testing strategies for HNA alleles, and the detection of HNA-antibodies have been developed, such as the granulocyte agglutination test and the granulocyte immunofluorescence test.
