N2 - The evaluation of patients with inflammation in one or several joint is one of the main responsibilities of the rheumatologist and remains an art as much as it is a science even today. This chapter discusses how history, physical examination, and the judicious use of laboratory testing and imaging can be used to ensure the highest likelihood of arriving at a proper diagnosis to inform the subsequent course of action. The chapter then continues with an overview of the main differential diagnoses that should be considered in patients presenting with monoarticular or polyarticular arthritis.
