Endoluminal treatment of vascular occlusive disease

Endovascular stenting has proven to be an invaluable asset in the treatment of the procedural complications of PTA of the iliac arteries. In addition, the value of primary iliac artery stent placement has been strongly suggested in recent reports. However, in treatment of long occlusive lesions, small arteries, and low-flow situations, clinical results have been less satisfactory. Additional improvements on existing devices, as well as the development of new materials and adjunctive medical therapies, can be expected to further broaden the indications for this minimally invasive and (probably) cost-effective procedure.
