Abstract
The revised version of the practice guideline 'Dementia' from the Dutch College of General Practitioners provides a sound and comprehensive overview, and a practical guideline especially for the period following the diagnostic evaluation. The advice on the issues of whether to refer patients and whether to start symptomatic drug treatment is stated in rather general terms. Therefore, for most general practitioners it will still be difficult to decide how best to act on these issues. The fact that the cognitive examination is treated as part of the history taking will, most probably, negatively affect the quality of the diagnostic evaluation
