Abstract
A patient who developed allergic contact dermatitis from the use of two sunscreen creams is described. She proved to be allergic to the ingredient Tinosorb® M, a UV-filter which contains methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, decyl glucoside, propylene glycol and xanthan gum. The allergen in this mixture is in most cases decyl glucoside. It is likely that contact allergy to this chemical occurs regularly. We advise to add methylene bisbenzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol 10% in petrolatum (Chemotechnique Diagnostics, contains Tinosorb® M) and lauryl glucoside 3% in petrolatum (as indicator for contact allergy to decyl glucoside, which is not commercially available for patch testing; Chemotechnique Diagnostics) to a cosmetic screening series or UV-filter test series for routine patch testing (and if indicated photopatch testing) in all patients suspected of contact allergy to cosmetic products.
