Abstract
Children with behavioral problems from families with multiple and complex problems (MCP) are more at risk of escalating problems. At the same time, many interventions reach these families less well, and behavioral change, e.g. due to parental upbringing, seems more difficult. This study investigates Stop Nu Ander Plan (n = 111), an outreaching group intervention for children with behavioral problems. It was investigated whether children from families with MCP are reached, what the active elements are in this, whether behavioral problems decrease, and what the relationship is with parenting stress. Almost half the children appear to come from families with MCP and 92.5% of them completed the intervention. Involvement, an outreaching and proactive attitude, an individual, flexible approach, and a respectful attitude seem to be effective elements. Behavioral problems and parenting stress are lower after the intervention. At follow-up, only reduction in behavioral problems is seen. Parenting stress at the start is not related to change in behavioral problems. The findings support the need for continued investment in the effective elements to reach this target group.
