Abstract

The anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties of dermatocorticosteroids make them effective treatments for a wide array of skin disorders. With prolonged application local side effects may occur, e.g. skin atrophy and dermatitis perioralis. The use of (too) large quantities of these topical drugs may result in systemic side effects such as iatrogenic Cushing and growth retardation in children caused by percutaneous absorption of the corticosteroids. By following some basic rules serious adverse effects of these valuable therapeutic tools can virtually always be prevented.
