Behandeling van MS-gerelateerde vermoeidheid: recente inzichten

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

Fatigue is a common symptom in multiple sclerosis
(MS), and has a large impact on daily functioning of
patients. In the Netherlands, fatigue in MS is usually
treated in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation setting,
and often consists of physical training and energy
conservation management. In the Dutch MS guideline
(2012), amantadine and modafinil are suggested
as treatment options as well. In this paper, recent literature
on various treatments for MS-related fatigue
is discussed. It is concluded that multidisciplinary
rehabilitation treatment, aerobic training and energy
conservation management do not seem to be effective
treatments for MS-related fatigue. Evidence for
pharmacotherapy is still inconclusive; amantadine
might be effective. Cognitive behavioral therapy
(CBT) for MS-related fatigue does show positive
short-term effects. We present a study aimed at nationwide
implementation of CBT for fatigue and improving
long term outcome following treatment.
