Effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in nursing homes: innovative big data analysis

Providing appropriate care to older adults in nursing homes is challenging. Care guidelines are sometimes contradictory, and knowledge about the effectiveness of commonly used interventions is lacking. Outcomes that are important to older adults and their families, such as quality of life, are often overlooked. In this project, we utilize large existing routine care databases to gain insight into the effects of paramedical and psychosocial interventions for nursing home residents. We apply innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in large databases to estimate the effects on, among other things, the quality of life of older adults and the deployment of care staff in long-term care. The knowledge generated by this new method can be used to enrich care guidelines, improve their substantiation, and make them practical. This allows healthcare professionals and policymakers to make appropriate choices when implementing interventions.
