Description
The accurate estimation of the age of biological evidence is essential in forensic investigations, as it can
provide crucial information to distinguish between crime-related and unrelated traces and determine the
strength of the evidence. Currently, no methods are available for this purpose. However, we have recently
proposed a novel method that utilizes fluorescence spectroscopy in combination with a stoichiometric
aging model to estimate the age of biological traces with high accuracy, onsite, without contamination or
destruction of the samples. To bring this method to the market, we aim to further develop our portable
fluorimeter and software into a more user-friendly prototype. Our focus will be on miniaturizing the system
and simplifying the use of our custom-written software. Additionally, we plan to perform a validation study
with biological samples under realistic forensic conditions. These enhancements will result in a minimum
viable product (TRL6) that can be brought to the market through a commercial partner.
