His clinical interests are broad, but he is especially fascinated by the consequences of inflammation on patient physiology. In particular, he feels engaged with patient groups that entail considerable uncertainty regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, such as infectious diseases, liver failure, hematology, and unexplained acute respiratory failure.

As deputy director of the intensive care curriculum Dr. Tuinman is responsible for the education of residents and fellows at the department. In this role he coordinates education, changed aspects of the curriculum (e.g. use of blended learning) and supervises the progress of the young doctors in training. Also, he is member of the national curriculum committee of intensive care training. Since 2018, dr. Tuinman is member of the European Diploma of Intensive Care Committee (EDIC) of the ESICM and has been center director for the EDIC 2 exam in Amsterdam until 2021.

Dr. Tuinman furthermore teaches critical care ultrasound both nationally and internationally. He is involved in the ultrasound modules of the Dutch Society of Intensive Care (NVIC), European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Society for Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). 

His research in critically ill patients with inflammation, infection, and sepsis focusses on less burdensome diagnostics and more targeted interventions, especially in patients with shock and/or acute respiratory failure. Topics studied are diagnostics such as ultrasound, optimization of fluid therapy, pathophysiology of acute lung injury, and physiology of mechanical ventilation.
