Research interests
I would describe myself best as an educational practitioner who believes in integrating research evidence into everyday practice. I worked as a general practitioner for 15 years in a multi-professional primary health care center. I combined this work with teaching clerks and physician assistants in the workplace, and from 2001 with part-time educational activities at the VU Faculty of Medicine. In 2003 I ended my GP work to fully focus on teaching in the areas of clinical reasoning, communication and reflection. With my colleagues at the VU Faculty of Medicine I established a longitudinal educational theme 'Professional Behaviour' in 2010, and coordinated teaching and assessment of this theme up to Sept 2020. Since the evidence on how to remediate unprofessional behaviour among medical students was not yet concrete, I choose to generate such evidence myself through conducting PhD research. In March 2019, I defended my thesis “Learning from lapses: How to identify, classify and respond to unprofessional behaviour in medical students”, for which I received my PhD with distinction. Currently, I am continuing my research and teaching activities as an assistant professor at the Department of General Practice Research/GP-training at Amsterdam UMC, location AMC. My research interests are professional development and professional identity formation in health professions education.
