Prof. M.J. Schultz obtained his PhD and MD (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in Amsterdam. He is a board-certified internist and ICU consultant with over 35 years of experience. He received several national and international research grants, totaling over €35.000.000 for preclinical and clinical research. His H-index is 128 with over 75000 citations, with 1200 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. He is a founding member of the ‘Protective Ventilation Network’ (PROVE Network) (www.provenetwork.org), a worldwide collaboration of researchers in ventilation in the ICU and the operating room.
