Personal profile
Research interests
Jurriaan Tuynman, is a full professor of surgery , colorectal oncological surgery since may 2024 and a staff member colorectal surgeon at the department of surgery in Amsterdam UMC , Boelelaan since jan 2014. My career after becoming a surgeon started with a KWF fellowship and senior clinical fellow ship in Oxford for two years dedicated for research and clinical training in advanced colorectal cancer treatment. After one year of fellowship in Amsterdam UMC, Meibergdreef and Boelelaan I started in 2014 with an academic staff position in Amsterdam UMC–Vumc with a clinical, research and education focus towards optimizing colorectal cancer treatment. Since the start I have been clinical leader for colorectal cancer care; by setting up a dedicated colorectal cancer MDT and setting up clinical care pathways for tertiary colorectal cancer treatment with a special focus towards peritoneal carcinomatosis from CRC , locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer and organ preservation for early rectal cancer in the Amsterdam UMC Boelelaan. In addition, I have been chair of the CRC patient research group in Amsterdam UMC. Recent years we have made a strong regional collaboration with Antoni van Leeuwenhoek MC and the centers in the Region Noord Holland/ Flevo. Dedicated colorectal cancer Grand Rounds (3 times / year) and regional clinical care pathways have been set up under my supervision. The collaboration allows optimal exchange of patients for which Amsterdam UMC fulfils the tertiary need for advanced interventions whereas part of the treatment, diagnostics and follow up is done regionally. These developments have contributed to the current position of Amsterdam UMC as an expert referral center for patients with advanced colorectal cancer for HIPEC and or advanced/recurrent rectal cancer.
Education has been one of the growing key activities; with the Amsterdam Skills center I have been organizing the national bowel cancer surgery course for senior surgical trainees on behalf of the Dutch gastrointestinal Society of Surgery. The last two years we have adapted the program to include scrub nurses which has been rated very well. In addition, I have started a large national education project together with Erasmus UMC and Ikazia MC that has been given a lot of (inter)national attention. Within this study project an optimized and standardized surgical procedure for bowel cancer is implemented throughout the Netherlands in 43 centers. Education for students; For medicine students I am leading the MINOR GE surgery since three years.
Research activities; Since 2014 I have been the lead of multicenter clinical trials COLOR3, TESAR, Right Study and the OLIPEC study and I have shown to have fund raising capacity. Overall, the aim for the coming years is to expand the clinical excellence in colorectal cancer with a robust multidisciplinary team in close collaboration with the NKI to establish a world leading center for CRC. Collaboration and facilitating pre- clinical research groups with Amsterdam UMC and NKI will help keeping CRC in the top scientific output in Amsterdam UMC
