Research interests

Prof. Middeldorp has a biochemistry (MSc 1980) and transplantation infectious disease background (University Hospital Groningen; PhD 1985).
He specialized in molecular virology-immunology with the aim of understanding virus-driven diseases and developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
Following a 15 year carrier in diagnostic industry (Organon - bioMérieux), he founded a spin-off company (www.cyto-barr.com) in 2000 and returned for 0.5fte to academics (VU University medical center, Amsterdam) to further explore the molecular basis of multiple EBV-linked diseases and associated diagnostic -therapeutic applications, with a special focus on EBV-driven cancers.
He is (co-)author on >250 peer-reviewed publications and (co-) inventor on 8 patent families.
