Research interests
My research is on quality of acute care for older patients, focussed on patient safety and patient-centeredness.
Patient safety is fundamental for quality of care, and therefore an important area of research with the ultimate goal to make care as safe as possible. We study the adverse event (AE) rates in Dutch hospitals structurally every four years, by conducting retrospective record review studies. I focus on the incidence, preventability, nature, and prevention strategies of AEs in older patients during an acute hospital admission, using multilevel analysis techniques.
Alongside patient safety, patient-centeredness is essential for quality of care. The goal of researching patient-centered care is to customize care to each individual patient, instead of the patient to care. I focus on the perspectives and experiences of older patients in acute care; by patient journey mapping, patient-reported measuring, and identifying ‘what matters most’.
Other research interests include artificial intelligence in healthcare, shared decision making, value-based healthcare and neuropsychology.
