A growing and aging population, combined with relatively high health expenditures and increased expectations for a more efficient health system that better addresses the needs of its users, has created a pressing need to transform the health system in Ireland. The 10-year reform programme Sláintecare, launched in 2017, sets out to improve the health system’s effectiveness, accessibility, resilience and fiscal sustainability.
